Gary Tonelli, was an active athlete who enjoyed playing hockey, baseball, football and broomball. He also coached many teams in those sports, including lacrosse. He coached and sat on the Board of Directors for many AAA teams. Gary was also involved with the local Junior teams, the Timmins Majors, Timmins Flyers and Timmins Golden Bears. If there wasn’t a place for kids to play, he started a team and included everyone.
He was perhaps best known as Mr. Baseball since 1980’s, returning men’s baseball to Timmins and keeping it alive for three decades. He not only started and ran the league, but he coached, umpired and was the league statistician!
He grew the association to include a boys and girls league, an inter-county men’s league and a juvenile team. That team eventually morphed into perennial champions the Whiskeyjacks. The men’s league now awards the Gary Tonelli Trophy to their league champion. Gary was a summer fixture at the Hollinger Park for decades, keeping the Field of Dreams alive!
